The twenty-one-year-old Joseph Walker opened his own bakery with a £50 loan, determined to create the finest shortbread in the world. In the first year, he dedicated every spare moment to perfecting his shortbread recipe, and his efforts paid off as his fame and demand for his quality shortbread grew. To accommodate the increasing business, Joseph moved to a larger shop in the Speyside village of Aberlour and invested in a horse and cart to deliver his baking further afield.

During the 1930s, the business expanded, with two of Joseph's sons, James and Joseph, joining the company and bringing fresh, new ideas. By 1936, they had introduced three valuable additions: a range of cakes, a selection of confectionery, and the company's first delivery van, allowing Walkers' products to reach an even wider market.

While some manufacturers began to compromise by using margarine instead of butter, Joseph remained committed to using the finest ingredients and maintaining the superior quality that customers had come to expect from Walkers. Even after his passing in 1954, his sons continued to use the original recipe, and the business continued to grow.

By the 1970s, Joseph's grandchildren had begun exporting Walkers shortbread to over 60 countries around the world, still baking to his original recipe. They won three Queen's Awards for Export Achievement, the highest accolade given to British exporters.

Today, the Walkers brand is cherished by loyal customers worldwide, who delight in the traditional shortbreads and innovative new products. All Walkers' products are packaged in the iconic red tartan, proudly bearing the image of Bonnie Prince Charlie and Flora MacDonald, reflecting the tradition and care that goes into every piece of Walkers shortbread.
